L'auteur de cette oeuvre, l'Imam des Imams Abdu-Ilah Mâlik, fils de Anas fils de Mâlik, né en l'an 33 de la Hijra à Médine. Il hérita à Médine la science du hadith ('Ilmu-l-hadith) et la propagea dans la Oumma. L'Imam fut initié par neuf cents (900) cheikhs. Il écrivit de sa propre main cent mille (100 000) hadiths. A l'âge de dix-sept (17) ans, l'imam Mâlik forma déjà son Majliss (cercle de formation) et très rapidement il dépassa les Majaliss (cercles) de ses cheikhs en nombre d'élèves, ceci de leur vivant. Les gens se bousculaient à sa porte pour apprendre le Hadîth et le Fiqh (la jurisprudence).
Il vécut quatre-vingt sept (87) ans et resta aux fonctions d'initiateur de la Oumma durant soixante (60) années et décéda en l'an soixante-dix neuf (79) de la Hijra, laissant derrière lui des centaines de disciples, un livre référence (al-Muwatta'), une méthode et une orientation générale (Mazhab).
Le Muwatta' est incontestablement l'un des premiers - si ce n'est le premier - livres islamiques écrits. L'appellation « Muwatta' » dérive du verbe « Watta » : aplanir, niveler, mettre à niveau etc., signifiant que l'Imam fit des efforts énormes pour faire une synthèse concrète et brève de l'essentiel de l'enseignement traditionnel relatif à la pratique quotidienne de l'Islam. Ainsi on peut donner à cette oeuvre le titre explicatif de Synthèse pratique de l'enseignement islamique.
L'Imam Mâlik laissa également une orientation méthodologique qui servait de guide à ceux qui voulaient l'imiter et qui prendra le nom de Mazhab (rite, école, obédience, etc.).
Ce Mazhab est l'un des quatre grands rites (mazhab) de tendance sunnite. Le rite mâlikite est actuellement suivi de façon massive en Afrique occidentale, en Afrique du Nord, aux Hijaz, en Egypte, en Andalousie, et en Iraq.
Le lecteur appréciera particulièrement les précieux commentaires et annotations du Cheikh Muhammad Diakho. Ce dernier est auteur d'une dizaine d'ouvrages aux éditions Albouraq. Citons parmi ceux-là : « Commentaire de la Sourate "les Chambres", un essai d'interprétation contemporaine de sourate al-Hujurat », « Les dix règles du Soufisme orthodoxe - traduction intégrale, notes et commentaire de al-qawâ"id-l-"achra d'Abû Hamid al-Ghazâlî », « L'esclavage en Islam, entre les traditions arabes et les principes de l'islam » et « La lapidation, précepte abrogé du droit musulman ».
