Taillé à l'échelle d'un mini-continent (quatre fois et demie la France), l'ex- Soudan anglo-égyptien est structuré autour du Nil et de ses affluents. Bien doté en voies d'accès par ce puissant réseau hydrographique et sans frontières naturelles très dissuasives, il est depuis toujours une terre de passage, largement ouverte sur les neuf pays de son voisinage : l'Egypte, la Libye, le Tchad, la République Centrafricaine, la République Démocratique du Congo, l'Ouganda, le Kenya, l'Ethiopie, l'Erythrée.
Cette position stratégique constitue un atout précieux, mais l'expose à tous les dangers et à toutes les convoitises, d'autant plus qu'il est bien doté en richesses naturelles. A l'indépendance, proclamée le 1er janvier 1956, les gouvernants (nordistes) se trouvent confrontés à un défi redoutable : comment reconstruire cet espace immense – fruit d'une épopée "égypto-ottomane" bicentenaire – dont le devenir a été fragilisé par 56 années de colonisation britannique ? Le Soudan vivra son demi-siècle d'existence dans une instabilité chronique, sur fond de coups d'Etat et de guerre civile, à la recherche d'une identité controversée (arabo-musulmane ou arabo-africaine), en quête d'une paix insaisissable entre l'Etat "nordiste" et les mouvements sudistes.
Par un mauvais coup du destin, l'accord signé à Naivasha entre Khartoum et le SPLM de John Garang, censé privilégier l'unité, débouchera sur la partition (par référendum), sans même amener une paix véritable, la "communauté internationale" se débarrassant cyniquement d'un conflit qu'elle avait attisé et laissant aux protagonistes le soin de régler les modalités de leur divorce. La République du Soudan du Sud est née le 9 juillet 2011, sonnant ainsi le glas de l'unité pour le géant arabo-africain.
Le nouvel Etat, le plus déshérité de la planète, est déjà sous la coupe américano-israélienne et sous la menace des prédateurs (multinationales, financiers...). Pour sa part, le "Soudan maintenu", amputé en territoire, en population et en ressources, est au pied du mur, sous pression des "pays de l'arrogance", l'Occident ayant trouvé au Darfour le nouveau Sud-Soudan dont il rêvait et dans la Cour Pénale Internationale un nouvel instrument d'ingérence.
Dans ce contexte, l'établissement de relations "fraternelles" entre les deux Soudans paraît illusoire. Pourtant, l'espace soudanais demeure, à l'épreuve du temps...
