Au-delà de traits physiques communs, une race, au sens large et ancien du terme, est caractérisée par une constitution mentale, un caractère qui est bien plus que des idées, des valeurs ou des croyances. Il est la « synthèse des êtres vivants qui la composent, mais surtout celle de tous les ancêtres qui ont contribué à la former ».
Au-delà de traits physiques communs, une race, au sens large et ancien du terme, est caractérisée par une constitution mentale, un caractère qui est bien plus que des idées, des valeurs ou des croyances. Il est la « synthèse des êtres vivants qui la composent, mais surtout celle de tous les ancêtres qui ont contribué à la former ». La civilisation produite par un peuple est la manifestation de ce caractère ; elle ne peut se transmettre à d’autres peuples sans modifications profondes, même si, dans un premier temps, ils semblent adhérer, de gré ou de force, aux aspects superficiels de cette civilisation. Cependant, si le mélange perdure, avec les siècles, deux peuples finiront par former une « âme collective » et créer une nouvelle civilisation sur les ruines de celles dont ils sont issus. Cette nouvelle civilisation, arrivant à son apogée, donnera alors naissance à ses plus beaux fruits : peinture, littérature, architecture, mais aussi découvertes scientifiques, progrès techniques ou institutions laisseront aux siècles futurs les éclats de sa grandeur.
Encore faut-il que cette nouvelle race soit féconde, car ce qui différencie, selon l’auteur, un peuple civilisé de celui qui ne l’est pas, n’est pas la masse de ceux qui le composent, dont les capacités mentales et l’intelligence sont sensiblement les mêmes ; ceux qui font la grandeur d’une civilisation constituent une petite fraction d’éléments que cette masse a été capable de produire et qui est absente chez les autres : « L’effet inévitable de la civilisation est de différencier les individus et les races. Ce n’est donc pas vers l’égalité que marchent les peuples, mais vers une inégalité croissante. »
Gustave Le Bon (1841-1931) est un médecin, anthropologue, psychologue et sociologue français. Après avoir parcouru le monde, dont il rapporta divers récits de voyage ainsi que des études archéologiques et anthropologiques, il s’intéressa aux lois régissant les comportements humains. Fort de ses connaissances de différentes civilisations, aussi bien contemporaines qu’anciennes, il publia en 1894 Les Lois psychologiques de l’évolution des peuples, qui sera suivi de son célèbre Psychologie des foules.
